Historical Flashback: How poor whites in the South were used during the U.S. Civil War

Today, there is an aggressive rise of open xenophobic views in the United States. It’s not new. Post the 1960s some Americans became cautious or were even embarrassed to expose their xenophobic beliefs outside of their peer groups.

The use of division of the American people is woven in the fabric of this nation.  Even though the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution states:

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.”

During the Civil War these historical newspaper articles expose how poor whites in the South were used as pawns to protect Southern aristocratic white wealth. The term “white trash” is the common term used in the press during the Civil War.

Today, across America many people still are under the spell of being used as pawns for others economic gains. Might these articles explain how the American press once tried to expose this fact.
