John Arrillaga writes $150 million check to Stanford University, the largest donation from a living individual ever

Stanford University alumnus, friend and benefactor John Arrillaga, ’60, has made a gift of $151 million to the university. The gift, Stanford’s largest single gift ever from a living individual, will be used over time to support a variety of university projects.
It is not the first philanthropic record made by the Silicon Valley real estate developer John Arrillaga Sr., who attended Stanford on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 1960.
Arrillaga gave the university $100 million in 2006 — then the largest donation of its kind — and his family’s name appears on buildings all over campus: Arrillaga Family Sports Center, the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation, the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center and the Arrillaga Family Dining Commons.
In 2012, Stanford University became the first university in the U.S. to raise more than $1 billion in a single year.

The Nike co-founder got the full attention of the 400 guests on the sixth floor ballroom in downtown Portland’s The Nines Hotel in short order: Here’s $500 million for cancer research, he said, if OHSU can match it in the next two years.
Philanthropists Phil and Penny Knight Friday pledged $500 million to kick-start a $1 billion cancer research initiative at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Phil Knight, Nike co-founder and chairman, said the pledge is contingent on OHSU’s success in raising at least $500 million more for cancer within two years.
OHSU has been in ongoing conversations with the Knights about the possibility of additional investment in the Knight Cancer Institute, which the couple supported with a $100 million gift in 2008 — but Friday’s announcement was a thrilling surprise.
The Knights’ challenge wowed an audience of 400 of OHSU’s top supporters at a Knight Cancer Institute gala, for which Phil and Penny served as honorary chairs. In his introduction of Knight Cancer Institute Director Brian Druker, M.D., Knight said that “it is incumbent on every one of us to do what he or she can to keep the miracles coming.”

Stephen M. Ross gives University of Michigan record $200 million

Gift represents largest single donation in U-M history and brings Ross’ total giving to the university to $313 million; Athletic Campus to be named the Stephen M. Ross Athletic Campus.
ANN ARBOR—Real estate developer and alumnus Stephen M. Ross will give $200 million to the University of Michigan to significantly transform the student experience at the business school and athletic campus.
Ross’ gift is the largest single donation in U-M history and makes him the biggest donor to his alma mater with lifetime giving of more than $313 million. The Stephen M. Ross School of Business and U-M Athletics will each receive $100 million.
With this gift, Ross becomes the third-largest donor to a business school in the United States. Ross is chairman and founder of Related Companies, one of the most prominent real estate developers in the world. Related Companies is best known for the development of Time Warner Center in New York and the 26-acre Hudson Yards development currently underway on Manhattan’s west side. Ross is also the owner of the Miami Dolphins.
The Stephen M. Ross School of Business and U-M Athletics will each receive $100 million.
Michigan Athletics proposes to improve its Athletic campus to:
- Provide student-athletes on all 31 teams with the necessary resources to be academically and athletically successful.
- Develop state-of-the-art facilities that create a sense of community, identity and tradition for all of our teams.
- Create additional spaces that help student-athletes develop skills for success after athletics.
Build facilities that are a destination for local, state, national and international competitions.
The Ross School of Business proposes to create:
- New spaces for students to study, collaborate and connect with each other, faculty and potential employers.
- A state-of-the-art career services space including an enhanced recruiting center to connect students with the best companies and careers.
- New spaces to support an “admission to alumni” approach to student and career services with dynamic events and opportunities on campus and beyond.

- Classrooms infused with advanced technology and innovative design to support in-person and virtual collaboration and connectivity on a global scale.

Charles Munger pledges $110 million for U-Michigan graduate residence and fellowships to create community of scholars; largest gift in university’s history

ANN ARBOR—A $110 million gift of securities from investor and philanthropist Charles T. Munger will support his vision for a new state-of-the-art residence at the University of Michigan designed to foster a community where graduate students from multiple disciplines can live and exchange ideas.
The gift includes $10 million for fellowships to help create a residential society that encourages scholarship and interaction from many fields of study. The U-M Board of Regents approved the project and related fellowship program at a meeting today.
The gift was the largest single donation to the university in its 196-year history, at the time it was given. The residence will be named in honor of Munger, a U-M alumnus and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Yale University President Peter Salovey, on 29 September 2013, announced a $250 million gift commitment to the university by Charles B. Johnson, a 1954 graduate of Yale College, who retired last year as chairman of the board of Franklin Resources. This is the largest gift in Yale history. The gift brings the university’s goal to expand Yale College within reach.
Already among Yale’s most generous donors, Johnson has previously contributed to the Papers of Benjamin Franklin and the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy, and he made a gift to establish the Johnson Center for the Study of American Diplomacy, which holds the papers of Henry Kissinger. He has also supported renovations of the Yale Bowl and the creation of Yale’s first all-season outdoor athletics field.
North Carolina State University receives its largest single gift in history- $50 million for scholarship endowment

With the largest single gift in university history, NC State is taking steps to ensure a viable future for a program that brings some of America’s brightest students to campus.
Chancellor Randy Woodson announced the $50 million donation from the Park Foundation on Sept. 27. The gift will plant the seed of an endowment that, with others’ support, will provide permanent funding for the university’s prestigious Park Scholarships.
The Park Scholarships program was created in 1996 through a generous gift from the Park Foundation, itself the creation of NC State alumnus Roy H. Park ’31. Park Scholars are selected on the basis of their outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service and character.
In addition to paying for tuition, room and board, the Park Scholarship also supports the scholars’ development as thinkers, doers and leaders.

The $50 million sum matches the largest single gift ever received by UNC-Chapel Hill, which is also located in the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan.
The Park Foundation of Ithaca, N.Y. was established by the late Roy Hampton Park, Sr., founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Park Communications, Inc.
Roy H. Park was born in Dobson, North Carolina, in 1910. He graduated from high school at the age of 15 and entered North Carolina State University where he majored in journalism. While a student, he edited the school newspaper, The Technician.
In 1949, Mr. Park launched a business relationship with famed restaurant expert Duncan Hines. The first product of Hines-Park Foods was the Duncan Hines Cake Mix, the first product of its kind and one that began a revolution in food preparation. Procter & Gamble purchased the company in 1956, and Mr. Park launched his second career — mass communications. Ultimately, what became Park Communications, Inc. acquired or built 22 radio stations, 11 television stations, and 144 publications of which 41 were daily newspapers.
The Park Foundation was formed in 1966. Its original focus was on education and grant-making in communities where Park Communications had interests. When he died in 1993, Mr. Park bequeathed more than 70 percent of his holdings to the Foundation.
The Foundation is dedicated to the aid and support of education, public broadcasting, environment, and other selected areas of interest to the Park family. Scholarship programs have been established in Mr. Park’s name at the two institutions with which he was so close — Ithaca College and North Carolina State University.

McCourt gives Georgetown University $100 million to launch public policy school

Georgetown University will realize a long-held vision to create a premier school of public policy in the nation’s capital, thanks to a gift of $100 million – the largest in its history.
The McCourt School of Public Policy (MSPP), funded through a gift from Frank H. McCourt Jr. (C’75), will be the ninth current school at Georgetown and the first new school at the university since 1957. It will focus on the use of evolving technology to help solve some of the most urgent and complex public policy challenges in the 21st century.
In 1977, Frank McCourt founded The McCourt Company, which specializes in the development of major commercial real estate projects, particularly parking lots. McCourt is president of the McCourt Group and owner of the Los Angeles Marathon. He was owner and chairman of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine from 2004-2012.

Auburn University board member pledges $40 million, biggest donation in university history

In recognition of a $40 million commitment from Harbert – the largest gift in Auburn University history and the largest received by an academic unit in Alabama higher education history – the Auburn University College of Business is now known as The Raymond J. Harbert College of Business.
Harbert, a 1982 graduate of Auburn, serves as chairman and CEO of Harbert Management Corporation, a Birmingham-based independent investment firm founded in 1993.
His pledge to the school comes in the form of a challenge. Harbert will donate $25 million to the university. If the school can raise another $15 million, he’ll match it for a total of $55 million for the university.

Opportunities for students to attend the University of South Alabama on an academic scholarship have increased significantly thanks to a longtime University donor and supporter who has made the largest gift ever given to a public university in the state of Alabama.
Mobile, Ala., businessman and philanthropist Abraham “Abe” Mitchell announced a gift of $50 million at USA’s 50th Anniversary celebration Friday night. Half of this gift, $25 million, will endow a new academic scholarship program for students in all fields of study. The other $25 million will support the University’s Mitchell College of Business.
Mitchell’s record $50 million gift, combined with the $43 million given previously by the Mitchell family, brings the Mitchell family’s total giving to USA to $93 million. This $93 million in total giving further secures Abe Mitchell and the Mitchell family’s distinction as the state’s leading family in philanthropic support of a public university in Alabama.
Though not alumni of the University of South Alabama, Abraham, Mayer and Arlene Mitchell endowed the University of South Alabama College of Business in 1999. The college was renamed the Mitchell College of Business to signify their extraordinary contribution to the future of business education.

According to university officials, the Mitchell family has given $93 million in donations to the university, including the $50 million just announced.
Mayer Mitchell served on the board of trustees for the University of South Alabama for over 30 years until his death in 2007. Governor Bob Riley appointed Arlene Mitchell to the University of South Alabama board of trustees to fill the vacancy created by the death of her husband.
After attending the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Mobile natives and brothers, Abraham and Mayer Mitchell, returned to their hometown to enter the real estate business. In 1958 Abe and Mayer Mitchell founded the Mitchell Company, which would become one of the most successful real estate development firms in the southeastern United States. The Mitchell Company grew rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, building more than 25,000 single family homes, 20,000 apartment units and 175 shopping centers. The Mitchell brothers sold their interest in the company in 1985 to turn their focus to philanthropic endeavors.
$20 million anonymous gift is largest in Lawrence Technological University’s history

Lawrence Technological University has received a $20 million gift to support its “Proud Heritage, Bold Future” capital campaign. It is the largest cash gift in the 4,500-student private university’s 81-year history.
The donor wishes to be anonymous.
The gift will be used to help fund the planned Dr. Richard E. Marburger STEM Center, which will support existing STEM programs at LTU and introduce new programs. Marburger was the university’s fourth president from 1977 to 1993 and remains active on campus as he approaches his 50th anniversary of service to the university.
This spring Lawrence Tech unveiled preliminary plans for the 125,000-square-foot A. Alfred Taubman Engineering, Life Sciences, and Architecture Complex that is expected to cost $55 million. Construction is expected to start next year and a portion of the gift will help provide new learning facilities in that building.
In July 2013, LTU received the largest in-kind software grant in its history with a commercial value of $40 million from Siemens PLM Software. The in-kind grant gives LTU students access to the same technology that companies around the world use every day to develop innovative products that are engineered for manufacturability in a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, defense, machinery, medical, high-tech, electronics and many more.
