World’s longest and deepest train tunnel opens
The Gotthard Base Tunnel opens at record-setting 57-kilometer long (35-mile long) and reaching a depth of 2,300 meters (7,545 feet, almost 1.5 miles).
Gotthard overtakes the 53.9-kilometer (33.49 miles) Seikan Tunnel in Japan as the longest rail tunnel in the world and the 50.5-kilometer (31.37 miles) Channel Tunnel between Britain and France is not third longest.
