Mitsubishi Estate plans Japan’s tallest building near Tokyo Station
The 1,279-foot skyscraper and three other structures will be just north of Tokyo’s main railway station

Mitsubishi Estate Co. says it will construct a 390-meter-high building, making it Japan’s tallest, as part of redevelopment project near Tokyo Station.
The structure will overtake the 300-meter-tall Abeno Harukas in the city of Osaka.
Mitsubishi Estate hopes the new building will serve both as a centerpiece of a major business district and tourist destination, officials said Monday.
The high-rise, which will have 61 stories above ground and five below, will be among four buildings to be put up in the Tokiwabashi district in Chiyoda Ward. The total project cost is estimated at more than ¥1 trillion.
Pending government approval, Mitsubishi Estate will start construction of the building in fiscal 2023 and aim for completion in fiscal 2027.
Located close to an area where the Bank of Japan and private-sector financial institutions have their head offices, the complex will be designed to boost Tokyo’s international competitiveness as a financial and business center.
The company is also considering construction of a 7,000-sq.-meter plaza in the neighborhood for use as an event venue.
Mitsubishi Estate President Hirotaka Sugiyama told a news conference Monday that he hopes the new building will “stand out in the world as a symbol of Tokyo.” The company hopes use of the building will not be limited to specific purposes, such as sightseeing or office space, aiming for a location that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, he said.
